Asthenospermia-A Condition In Men That Can Affect Fertility

Problems with fertility are not restricted to only men. It has been found to be common knowledge that one in 20 men will experience difficulties with conception. In most cases of infertility, the primary cause is poor sperm count, while in others it is the fact the sperm are inadequately motile. This fertility condition in men is called Asthenospermia, which refers to cases when the sperm motility is too low for conception to take place.

When we talk about motility, we are referring to how fast the sperm cells are able to move forward in an attempt to reach the eggs for fertilization. There are four types of sperm cells based on how fast they are able to travel. These categories range from “a” to “d”, with a category sperm being the fastest and the “d” category being the slowest. It is “c” and “d” category sperms that are to be blamed for poor fertility.

  • Below we will discuss some of the reasons for Asthenospermia.
  • Reproductive system infection which may be caused by excessive and frequent masturbation
  • Regular smoking may also result in poor sperm motility
  • Excessive alcohol consumption is known to have a negative effect on sperm motility
Asthenospermia is the term used to define a condition in which the male sperm suffers from poor sperm motility, which refers to a fertility problem caused by the sperm cells not being able to travel fast enough to reach the eggs to carry out fertilization.

Few of the causes which lead to this condition in men are, occasionally, the anti sperm antibodies mistaking the body’s immune system and attacking its own sperms, as well as cases where a heavy dose of antibiotics affect the sperm quality and motility.

A lack of the appropriate nutrients present in the body can also be the reason for developing astenospermia, and so can the overuse of chemicals or heavy metals. In some rare cases, the cause may be the increased temperature of the testicles while using sauna and hot tubs.

Additionally, while these may be some of the causes of asthenospermia, age and genetics have also been known to play a prominent role in developing Asthenospermia.

Some of the ideas for the prevention of this condition that have been proposed for asthenospermia are:

  • Give up smoking
  • Make your diet more nutritious
  • Make healthy alterations to your lifestyle
  • Avoid getting into contact with heavy dosage of chemicals in your lifestyle
  • Avoid using antibiotics on a regular basis
  • Do not masturbate excessively
